place for you! The HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals
located throughout the state, and one youth residential psychiatric
center in Waco. The HSCS is a hub of excellence for forensic mental
health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited
by The Joint Commission. The hospitals provide state-of-the-art
treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. Whether in a
direct-care or support role, your contribution will make a
difference in the life of a Texan.
The psychiatrist in this position is responsible for completing the
initial suicide screening form prior to the admission of each
patient that presents to the hospital. The psychiatrist will be
responsible for documentation and timely finalization of this
screening form in the electronic medical record. In addition this
position will take on the responsibility of working in conjunction
with the Advanced Practice Nurse when a form is needed to be
completed by a Physician. This Psychiatrist position will allow for
the use of onsite psychiatry care and Telepsychiatry in combination
to perform the essential job functions. Generally, the
Telepsychiatrist will work Monday through Friday 8 am to 12 pm in
the SH's time zone. Some deviations to the schedule may be
pre-approved by the supervisor to meet the needs of the
Telepsychiatrist and the SH. This position will cover for the care
of patients assigned to the Advanced Practice Nurse when the nurse
is not on the unit. This will entail participating in the case
formulation, multidisciplinary case conference, treatment plan
reviews, medication reviews, and completing psychiatric
evaluations.
This psychiatrist will also work with medical students and
residents rotating through the hospital as assigned by the Medical
Director. The physician will provide treatment to HHS Employees in
the course and scope of employment. The psychiatrist is under the
general supervision of the medical director and ultimately
responsible to the facility superintendent (governing body in
situ).
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a
specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule,
extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave
policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Completion of the initial admission suicide screening form.
Physician backup for completing Physician Certificates required by
the Advanced Practice Nurse.
Assuming responsibility for the care of the patient's assigned to
the Advanced Practice Nurse on the weekday when the assigned doctor
is routinely off also on days when the Advanced Practice Nurse is
out ill or away on scheduled annual leave.
Testify in court on those patients for whom the Physician
Certificate has been completed.
Provides other necessary psychiatric assessments for patients not
assigned to him/her which can include second opinions, second
physician certificates and assessments when the assigned clinician
is not available.
Completes face-to-face assessments within the specified time on
those patients that have been restrained or are in seclusion.
Is available to respond to all questions and concerns by the
nursing staff and other clinical care staff. This will include
calling in necessary orders as well as performing medical
evaluations on patients of concern as needed.
Documents all interactions and orders according to Medical Staff
Bylaws and other policies put forth by Rio Grand State Center.
Provides treatment to HHS Employees in the course and scope of
employment. Maintains unrestricted, active Physician license by the
Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively
participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the
agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or
Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may
require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of psychiatric principles and methods; of methods and
procedures in general medicine; and of the principles and practices
in the development, implementation, and documentation of
individualized care and treatment plans.
Skill in the care and treatment of patients, in the use of medical
and psychiatric diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment, and
in conducting psychiatric research.
Ability to direct psychiatric activities; to examine, diagnose, and
treat mental disorders; to interpret psychological diagnoses and
analyses; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, an/or
supervise the work of others.
Ability to diagnose and treat mental disorders as well as the
ability to recognize and refer non-psychiatric medical conditions
for appropriate treatment.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Full unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of
Texas.
Must be licensed as a medical doctor by the State of Texas.
Successful completion of a residency approved by the accreditation
Council on graduate medical education or equivalent body.
Three years post-residency clinical experience in their respective

The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which
are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary

cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are
vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires
employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with

protective measures.
