Overview In conjunction with the Trauma Medical Director, is responsible for the organization of services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to providing care to injured patients and for managing, promoting, evaluating and directing the day-to-day operations of the Trauma Program. Provides direction for patient care across the continuum in collaboration with the trauma team physicians, sub-specialists, nursing and ancillary services. The Trauma Coordinator is a registered nurse who is responsible for promoting optimal trauma care, through clinical activities, professional and public education, administrative functions, and quality improvement activities. The Trauma Coordinator is responsible for the Trauma PI Program, Trauma Registry, and Community Injury Prevention Programs. Works in conjunction with outside agencies including EMS and other regulatory agencies. Close communication with these groups allows the coordinator to function as a stabilizing force in the multidisciplinary care required by the trauma patient. This involvement begins with the pre-hospital care of the patient, care in the emergency department, and extends through admission to discharge home, transfer to an institution with a higher level of care, entering into a rehabilitation program, or death. It is important for the coordinator to establish and maintain a communication system with all departments and individuals involved in the care of trauma patients.Responsibilities 1.Develops specific departmental trauma focused goals, standards and objectives.2. Participates in and coordinates planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the trauma program.3. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards that affect the organization and ensures departmental compliance.4. Assesses quality of trauma patient care and in cooperation with the ED Director coordinates patient care services with patients, staff, physicians and other departments5. Reviews the plan of care for each trauma patient to ensure that trauma protocols are initiated and followed.6. In cooperation with the ED Director, manages staff relations including trauma performance management, staff satisfaction and conflict management.7. Facilitates transfers of trauma patients to higher level of care facilities as appropriate.8. Coordinates and directs activities related to trauma services.9. Responsible (or designee) for the data collection, review and entry of information into the database. Participates in the timely completion, accuracy and report generation of the trauma registry.10. Conducts monthly trauma meetings. Assures that minutes include communication of the organization's direction and operation. Distributes minutes to appropriate individuals.11. Coordinates the development of trauma specific protocols and guidelines, and monitors adherence and effectiveness of the protocols.12. Develops trauma related educational programs with other members of the ED and hospital Education Department for hospital staff and regional affiliates (i.e. ATLS Course Coordination).13. Participates in relevant state and national meeting and is a member of appropriate organizations.14. Monitors clinical processes and outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided to trauma patients; develops quality filters, audits and case reviews; identifies trends and sentinel events related to trauma patients; and helps outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality.15. Coordinates management across the continuum of trauma care, which includes the planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.16. Provides for intra-facility and regional professional staff development; participates in trauma case review, implements trauma practice guidelines where indicated and coordinates community trauma education and prevention programs.17. Manages, as appropriate, the operational and personnel aspects of the trauma program. Serves as a liaison to administration; and represents the trauma program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care18. Supervises collection; coding, scoring, and developing processes for validation of data. Designs the registry to facilitate performance improvement activities, trend reports and research while protecting confidentiality.19. Provides trauma patient care when necessary.20. Performs all other duties as assigned or required.21. Facilitates monthly trauma meeting.Qualifications 1.Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science, preferred.2. Current licensure State Board of Nurse Examiners.3. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.4. Current ACLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.5. Current PALS (AHA) or ENPC certificate upon hire and maintain current.6. TNCC required7.
