Overview The Operating Room Tech is responsible for the preparation of sterile supplies and instruments for each assigned procedure, maintaining sterile field during case and providing surgeon with sterile supplies and instruments during assigned procedures.Responsibilities Demonstrates appropriate counting of instruments, sponges and sharps per departmental protocol.Assists surgeons with gowning, gloving draping and set up of sterile patient field. Hands instruments and supplies to physician appropriately and in a timely manner anticipating needs.Maintains and monitors sterile field, reporting and correcting breaks in sterile technique.Monitors all instrumentation and equipment during use (i.e., electro-cautery instruments, electric and pneumatic drills, light sources, insufflations devices etc.), for placement, settings and functioning paying attention to any and all audible alarms.Labels medications, checks name, dosage and expiration date with circulating RN. Exhibits knowledge of appropriate protocol for an incorrect count.Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate use, assembly and disassembly of instruments and equipment used during the surgical/invasive procedure.Demonstrates appropriate handling and labeling of specimens to ensure correct processing.Consistently uses two different patient identifiers before transporting when needed. Consistently and appropriately performs Universal Protocol "time out" according to facility policy.Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Control Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogens standards and CDC Guidelines). Demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, gowns, goggles and masks), hand hygiene technique.Demonstrates containment of contamination during and after procedure, appropriate disposal of sharps, separation of regular trash and contaminated trash. And appropriate handling of contaminated instruments (i.e., open box locks, soaking in solution, covered and marked during transport.Assists in the ordering of medications/drugs from Pharmacy or pharmacy location for OR use.Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues within the unit/facility.Takes stand-by call as scheduled and responds within the required timelines.Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling,--trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation 3)Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.Maintains current knowledge of advances in job-related technology and activities.Performs other duties as assigned or required.Qualifications 1. High School Diploma or Equivalent or related experience required for new hires effective April 2014.2. Graduate of an ORT training program and Certified by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting3. Experience in scrubbing minor and major procedures in the generalized surgical specialties, (i.e., GYN, General and Plastics).4. Experience in scrubbing at least minor procedures in the specialty surgical areas (i.e., ortho, neuro, ENT, Uro. Etc.).5.
