The Phlebotomy Technician I primarily perform skin puncture or
venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a
blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under
the supervision of Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. The
PT I; 1) performs computer data entry, filing, telephone
communication and other clerical duties, 2) possesses adequate
knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory, 3)
demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in
greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly
manner, 4) demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of
equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric
patients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology,
coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6)
processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories, 7)
stocks and orders routine supplies, 8) maintains the cleanliness of
storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work
areas, 9) processes or load specimens on automated laboratory
instrumentation in accordance with established policy and
procedures, 10) May be assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR,
assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put
away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies,
order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone,
product deliveries, etc.. 11) other tasks or responsibilities may
be assigned by the department manager/director.
Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all ages
from newborn to geriatric in a safe, accurate, and timely
Collects and processes biological specimens for laboratory analysis
according to accepted procedure and observing proper precautions
with potentially hazardous substances.
Reviews and documents orders for appropriateness. Includes review
and verification of duplicate orders.
Ensures positive patient identification, minimum two required
patient identifiers, prior to performing patient draw. No
misidentifications are permitted.
Properly labels blood specimens drawn with Initials (PT1
identifier), date, and time of collection on each specimen
Completes blood draws in a timely manner, routine - within 6
minutes, difficult cases - within 15 minutes, routine capillary
punctures - within 10 minutes.
Processes specimens immediately upon arrival in the laboratory and
distributes to the departments.
Recognizes problems with specimens, attempts to correct problem and
notifies appropriate personnel and supervisor. Documents
Reviews tracking monitor on a regular basis and resolves pending
Completes any draws generated 15-minutes prior to shift change.
Greets outpatients and processes them promptly (within 10 minutes
of patients arrival).
Accurately enters specimen information into computer. Medical
record number, name, date and time must be verified with
requisition with less than 2 date errors per year. No medical
record number or name errors.
Demonstrates the proper use of phlebotomy equipment and safety
Keeps the phlebotomy room and office area well organized and neat
at all times. Keeps paperwork and reports out of access to visitors
and patients. Follows HIPAA regulations.
Maintains inventory of all trays and outpatient phlebotomy area.
Each should be fully stocked prior to next shift. Keep all trays
and draw area clean after use.
Processes send-outs timely and accurately based on specimen and
reference lab requirements. All send-out specimens collected up to
30 minutes prior to end of shift must be processed.
Reviews pending reference lab reports for timely reporting.
Performs microbiology culture set-up and processes specimens for
referral to reference lab.
Actively participates in the training and orientation of new
employees and other employees learning new duties.
Performs other duties as assigned, by the Lead PT-1, CLS, Lab
Manager, Lab Director.
1. High School Diploma, or equivalent, required
2. Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain
