Job Description:

OverviewEach individual performs those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA,Bus. & Prof. Code Section 1204, and must possess a degree of skill commensurate with individuals education, training orexperience and technical abilities. Each individual performing the above procedures must: 1) adhere to the laboratorysprocedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results, 2) follow the laboratorysestablished quality control policies and procedures in documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviatefrom the laboratorys established performance specifications, 3) be capable of identifying problems that may adverselyaffect test performance and either correct the problem or immediately notify your immediate supervisor, Director, orMedical Director, 4) perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using both manualand automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, andany other discipline as introduced into the laboratory, 5) perform and document maintenance daily, weekly, monthly, oras needed on instruments and equipment as appropriate, 6) review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing orreporting, 7) recognize age specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics, 8) ensure that the testing ofproficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and that collaboration with otherlaboratories is prohibited prior to the reporting of proficiency testing results to the appropriate agencies, 9) may berequired to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics, 10) assist in thedevelopment and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures, 11) adheres to all department and hospital policiesand procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources, 12) 12) in theabsence of a supervisor, may be assigned/identified as Lead Tech, having responsibility for the section ordepartment during their shift, 13) may be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POCT. 14) other tasksor responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/directorResponsibilitiesPerforms and verifies quality controls results, documents corrective action taken to resolveany QC outliers.Verifies correct labeling of all specimens prior to testing and notifies laboratory supervisor ofall labeling errors. Completes hospital variance report.Reviews the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting. Does not reportquestionable test results, notifies supervisor and if needed, has specimen recollected for alltests.Recognizes age specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatricsReports results accurately in computer with less than 2 errors per year which require acorrected report. No serious errors are permitted.Critical values are called to the nursing unit or physician within time limits established by thelaboratory and accurately documents read-back for results called.Readily identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correctsthe problem or immediately notifies supervisor, Director, or Medical DirectorFormulated: 1/2010 3 Revised: 1/14/14Regularly performs routine and periodic instrument maintenance as recommended bymanufacturer or policy.Performs basic instrument troubleshooting and calls vendor technical service promptly withmore complicated problems.10 Performs testing on Proficiency Testing samples in accordance with laboratory procedureand regulatory requirements.When performing data entry, accurately enters specimen information into computer. Medicalrecord number, name, date and time must be verified with requisition. Less than 2 dateerrors per year. No medical record number or name errors are permitted.Completes daily tasks such as stocking supplies, rotating specimens, cleaning counters, andinstruments. Dispose of waste in appropriate containers.Completes laboratory testing within turn-around time expectations, as established indepartment policy and procedure.Completes all work within scheduled shift, without unapproved overtime.Reviews and resolves pending list entries periodically throughout the shift, at the end of theshift, and endorses to the next shift.Takes the initiative to assist in other areas of the department when needed, based ontechnical ability.Assists in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures asrequested by supervisor/managerAssists in performing venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newbornto geriatrics when needed.Actively participates in the training and orientation of new employees.Actively participates in the quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives of thedepartment.In the absence of the supervisor, may be assigned as Lead Tech, providing supervision forwork performed in the section or department, during the shift. This will include, but notlimited to, the review of test results reported, organizing work flow, and prioritizing work asneeded.Assists in scheduling work assignments of staff to maintain consistent and adequatecoverage of the department.Performs/assists with staff competency assessments in a timely manner.Performs Proficiency Testing samples per organization policy and successfully achievingpassing score pursuant to the standardsPerforms other duties as assigned by Lab Manager and/ or Laboratory Director.POINT OF CARE TESTING (POCT)1 Ensures appropriate proficiency testing enrollment2 Ensures appropriate performance of POC proficiency testing3 Maintains and ensures POCT P&Ps are current and accessible to end users4Effectively troubleshoots POCT testing problems and requests vendor intervention asneeded5Maintains and reviews POCT Quality Management program and provides reports to theclinical laboratory management and hospital administration as needed.6Monitors competency of all Point of Care testing operators and coordinates corrective actionfor competency assessment deviations.7 Ensures appropriate instrument/reagent/kit performance prior to distribution to end users8 Ensures instrument correlations are performed at least twice per year.9Ensures that new procedures or instrumentation is appropriately validated, procedureswritten, and staff trained prior to implementation.10 Maintains records and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements of all Formulated: 1/2010 4 Revised: 1/14/14licensing and accreditation agencies and organizations.11 Provides for and coordinates POC training of laboratory staff and other hospital users.12 Performs other duties as assigned by the Lab Manager and Laboratory DirectorQualifications1. ASCP certification, or equivalent, required within one year of employment2. Associates Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or completion of coursework in a program for MLT.3. 1 year of hospital laboratory work experience preferred, but not required4.
